The Boy Scout
Leader's Wood Badge course was the advanced training program for Boy Scout
troop leaders. It was designed to train Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters,
and other Scouters directly involved with Boy Scout troop operation. Its
purpose was to aid Boy Scout troop leaders in providing a quality program
that would enable each Scout to grow to his greatest potential.
The Boy Scout Leader's Wood Badge program consisted of two parts -
practical training and application. The practical leadership experience
was gained in a training troop camp setting where leadership skills
could be learned and practiced as a part of life in the troop. At the
conclusion of the practical training, each participant had a minimum
of six months and a maximum of two years following practical training
to complete the application phase and meet all of the goals that had
been established.
The Boy Scout Leader's Wood Badge course involved the troop leader
in situations likely to be found in a typical Boy Scout troop. The training
was applied in a variety of Scoutcraft activities as well as in an in-depth
exploration of the role of the adult leader in developing youth through
Boy Scouting.
2001 was the final year nationwide for the Boy Scout
Leader's Wood Badge program. In 2001, the BSA introduced a new program simply named "Wood Badge". This
program is intended to serve adult leadership in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting
and Venturing, and will focus on leadership skills. Our first local
offering of this exciting and totally new program was Fall 2001.
