Junior Leader Training Junior Leader Training or JLT, begins in the troop. Troop Junior Leader Training follows the Scoutmaster's Junior Leader Training Kit, which includes a workbook and a video tape. This kit is a step by step guide for the Scoutmaster to provide training to their youth leadership. The first step in training junior leaders begins with a session called "Introduction to Leadership." The Scoutmaster or a designee conducts this session with each new leader shortly after each troop election. The second step in the junior leader training is called "Troop Junior Leader Training: Building the Team." This leadership development session is conducted after the unit's elected and appointed junior leaders have completed "Introduction to Leadership." It is the Scoutmaster's responsibility to organize and lead this phase of the training program with the assistance of other adult Scouters and trained junior leaders. Upon completion of this training, a youth may wear the Trained Leader emblem on his uniform.
Den Chief Training Den Chief Training is available for Boy Scouts that offer service and leadership to Cub Scout Packs as Den Chiefs. This program is offered annually at Pow Wow. After completing this program, the den chief is entitled to wear the Trained Leader patch below the Den Chief badge of office.
National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) (formerly Junior Leader Training Conference)
This is a six-day outdoor training experience for youth leaders in
Boy Scout troops, Varsity teams, and Venturing crews. The course design and
content has been developed by the National BSA Council and is offered by your
local council as the next step after the
Introduction to Leadership Skills provided by the adult leaders within their
units. The course may be presented as a week-long course or as two weekends.
Verdugo Hills Council will offers National Youth Leadership
Training in a two-weekend format in February and March. An informational meeting
will be held prior to the course for participating Scouts, along with their
parents and Scout leaders. There are several staff opportunities for Scouts who have already completed NYLT. If you are interested in "passing it along" to fellow Scouts, join us as a staff member!
National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE)
The purpose of NAYLE is to build upon the knowledge from the National Youth
Leadership Training camp at the local council. Additional Outdoor
Leadership experiences are included to make this an exceptional opportunity.
The week-long program is conducted at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and in
each of the four Regions. For complete information about the program, visit the
NAYLE web site or check the Philmont Training Center schedule.
