Desert Awareness

Who should go: Adult leaders for Boy Scouts and Venturers who will be camping in the desert.

Scheduled Classes: May 17-18, 2008

Location: Red Rock Canyon State Park

Prerequisites: Basic Backpack Awareness

Personal Equipment: Tour Permit, clothing suitable for hot days and cold nights, Scout uniform, food and cooking gear, personal backpacking gear including tent, daypack, pencil and paper and lots of extra water.

Course Description: This course is designed to provide to Scouting Leaders, the knowledge and skills that will aid them in the planning and execution of outings in the harsh conditions of the desert. It consists of one session, a weekend overnight where you will learn about the desert and put the skills to use in the real world. In addition to specific information to supplement the skills areas already covered in Outing Awareness, new areas such as solar stills, ecology, and night navigation will be included.
