Event Calendar
The Verdugo Hills Council Event Calendar is a listing of all events, activities or outings that are managed by or affect the Verdugo Hills Council, and It is intended to be used as an aid to unit program planning. This calendar is updated in real time, and is kept as up-to-date as possible. The calendar page is actually an application, allowing you to do several things. You can download individual events to your PDA or calendar program, have email reminders sent to you about upcoming events, or you can subscribe to council events using RSS feeds. You can also look at all types of council events simultaneously, or you can filter events by type, such as training or camping.
This generally refers to the annual Unit Program Planning Conference, the standard way in which most successful units plan their program year. Prior to holding your annual unit program planning conference, you should make sure and have available:
Religious holidays that affect the individuals in your unit
Special days and events of your chartered organization
School calendars for the participants in your unit
Special days where a significant number of families in your unit may be unavailable

For further information on the annual unit program planning activities, see the Scoutmaster Handbook and the Cub Scout Leader Book.
Legal holidays, and holidays that affect the operation of the council, are listed in the event calendar. Legal holidays include New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Certain religious holidays are listed, because they affect the council operations (non-Orthodox Good Friday and Christmas.) For consistency, no other holidays or "Special Days" are listed, as they have no effect on the operations of the council. Exceptions to this are determined by the Council Executive Committee on a case by case basis, and currently include Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur and Passover (Pesach).
This is a difficult question. If we were to list all of the religious holidays that affect the members of our council, we would have a holiday calendar that contained some council events. If we were only to include holidays of the "popular" religions, we would risk offending members of those we chose not to include. The fundamental purpose of the calendar is to communicate council activities and operations to its members, not a list of holidays. Therefore, we have chosen not to list events or holidays that do not affect the operation of the council. In the end, it is up to each unit to determine in the course of their program planning which of these holidays they feel is important to them, and to plan their events accordingly.
